Onboarding – more than a tour and paperwork

You greet your new employee, sit them down to fill out some forms, take them on a tour, make some introductions, show them where the office supplies are and the bathroom is, and viola, your new employee is a part of the team and ready to produce. And finished just in time to get to your next meeting.

Wait! Hold on! – day one, and even earlier, is the time for you to begin engaging and installing company values in your new hires. Tracy McCarthy has some suggestions for the first day:

  • Send the new hire an email before their first day
  • Make sure the paperwork is organized
  • Provide a mentor
  • Make sure they have a chance to get some real work done

See the rest of McCarthy’s article for Corp magazine for more on starting the employment relationship off right. And once you have finished onboarding, maybe a little cranberry bog wakeboarding.
